Since the beginning of his scientific career, our company founder Prof. Dr. Günther Hambitzer has been pursuing his vision of solving the problem of battery ageing at its chemical root. The cornerstone was laid as early as 1989 with his doctoral thesis, in which he was able to trace battery ageing in organic systems back to side reactions. With his habilitation in 1995, he formulated the basics for a new high-energy system. The discovery of the HPB Solid-State Electrolyte was his penicillin moment.

HPB is working closely with two Swiss specialists on the coating process for its solid-state battery electrodes: Mathis AG in Oberhasli and TSE Troller AG in Murgenthal. The partnership focuses on preparing for industrial series production for future manufacturing licensees of HPB technology. The process windows defined by HPB are intended to remain valid on these series-production systems without licensees having to determine the coating parameters again on their own equipment. For HPB as a technology licensing company, this transferability is a key criterion.

HPB – High Performance Battery is not building a gigafactory of its own: the German-Swiss company licenses its solid-state technology to manufacturers who produce locally. For the battery value chain that is one route to industrial scale without the capital intensity of an own cell factory.
