Since the beginning of his scientific career, Günther Hambitzer has pursued his vision of solving battery ageing at its chemical root causes. The foundation was already laid in his 1989 dissertation, in which he was able to trace battery ageing in organic systems back to side reactions. With his habilitation in 1995, he formulated the foundations for a novel high-energy battery system. Since then, he has been pushing its further development to market maturity, both on a scientific and entrepreneurial level.

A precursor technology (still liquid-based) has already successfully completed more than 50,000 charging cycles and has been in use for grid stabilisation in the USA since 2017. The HPB solid-state batteries have been running for more than 12,500 cycles compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries with 1,250 cycles (1C/1C at 0-100% state of charge).

Deutsches Unternehmen erfindet Batterie neu

Batterien gelten als das Gold in der Zukunft, als Energiespeicher für ganz viele Dinge. Das Problem bisher: Batterien haben noch zu wenig Leistung. Nehmen wir jetzt zum Beispiel das Auto: Ein gutes E-Auto kann mit einer Batterieladung um die 400 Kilometer fahren – vorausgesetzt man nutzt die Klimaanlage nicht zu sehr und dann nach circa 3000 Ladevorgängen sind viele Batterien runter, müssen ausgetauscht werden. Genau da kommt jetzt ein deutsches Unternehmen und sagt: „Wir haben den Game-Changer gefunden für die Energie- und Verkehrswende." Sebastian Heinz ist der Geschäftsführer dieses Unternehmens mit dem vielversprechenden Namen „High Performance Battery", also Hochleistungsbatterie. Mit ihm habe ich hier bei MDR AKTUELL gesprochen.

Große Entdeckungen sind manchmal das Produkt eines glücklichen Zufalls. Eine der bekanntesten ist ein unerwünschter Schimmelpilz auf einem vergessenen Laborexperiment, der dann plötzlich alle möglichen Bakterien tötet. Besser bekannt ist er als Penicillin. Das war das Forschungsziel, die Batteriealterung aufzulösen und mit der Lösung sind wir über den Feststoffakku gestolpert. Also, die Entdeckung des Feststoffakkus war im Grunde genommen unser Penicillin-Moment.
